Do you love the great outdoors? Is hiking a favourite recreational activity? Do you revel in the wonders of nature? Are you always looking for a new outdoor experience? Then turn to the books. Outdoor books

There are books on the subject of outdoor trails, outdoor hikes, outdoor adventures, outdoor camping, plants, animals, rivers and anything else pertaining to nature and the outdoors, relevant to every country. Wild weekends in Utah; an outdoor adventure guide by Lori Lee is a guide to Utah, her home state.

In her book, Lori Lee describes in great detail the desert area of Paria Canyon to the Colorado River and the Wasatch Range, suitable for activities such as backpacking, hiking, river rafting, and mountain biking. The book includes maps of the outdoors and personal notes, including possible itineraries.

The Outdoor Photographer's Handbook is a great companion for photographers who love the outdoors. With 20 years experience, the authors have learned a great deal about the errors and mistakes that can easily occur when taking photographs in the outdoors. The book deals with both digital and film shots, and covers all related aspects. It is definitely the practical how-to guide for the outdoor photographer.

Early bird specialists

ROWLEY -- Under an almost-full moon, Oscar Fortin unloaded his old green station wagon. He pulled out a wooden samurai sword, a banana box full of old books, a child-size trumpet, and two pairs of cowboy boots. Within minutes, a pair of bobbing flashlights appeared. Two men were approaching, moving rapidly across the dark, frost-covered field. They swept their lights across the pile of items, then circled the car without a word, leaning in close to peer in the open doors. The Todd Farm Antique & Flea Market was open for business. It was almost 4 a.m. Every Sunday morning from April through November, a strange and shadowy ritual plays out on this swath of former farmland 30 miles north of Boston. Driven by a burning desire to be the first to survey incoming merchandise, and a nagging fear of being beaten to the prize, the highly competitive dealers who buy and sell here have ratcheted the outdoor market's start time steadily backward during its 25 years in business....

Ex-Spiegel Execs Paying SEC Fines
Posted Friday, November 03, 2006 2:50:23 AM by Blog57 Team
A former CEO of catalog retailer Spiegel Inc. and four other ex-executives on Thursday agreed to pay civil fines to settle federal regulators' charges they participated in concealing the true condition of credit card debt carried on the company's books. The Securities and Exchange Commission announced the settlement with former CEO Martin Zaepfel; the former co-presidents, Michael Moran and James Sievers; former chief financial officer James Cannataro, and former treasurer John Steele. The SEC alleged, in a civil lawsuit filed in federal court in Chicago, that the former executives violated securities laws in a complex scheme in 2001-02 designed to hide the "deteriorating performance" of the credit card debt that Spiegel had on its books. In addition, former Spiegel board chairman Michael Otto and two former directors, Michael Crusemann and Horst Hansen, settled charges that they played a role in the decision to delay filing the company's 2001 annual report and first-quarter 2002 report to avoid having to disclose a unfavorable auditor's opinion....

SALISBURY -- Besides deciding the fate of dozens of local, state and national political candidates in next month's general election, one local and four state referendums questions are on the ballot for Wicomico County residents. The most important question to many is the Sheriff's Office item. Question A, which was placed on the ballot after the local Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 111 obtained more than 10,000 petition signatures, is requesting an amendment to the County Charter that would grant deputies binding arbitration power. ....

Another St. Louis book festival is up in the air
Posted Sunday, October 15, 2006 6:47:55 AM by Blog57 Team
The first Big Read was a big success, but organizers don't know yet whether there will be a second outdoor book festival next year in the St. Louis area. "On all levels, I think it really succeeded very well," said Cindy Prost, director of Cultural Festivals. The Clayton organization, which also puts on an art festival and a jazz festival, will start evaluating the Big Read with its board on Friday. Prost said she expects to know before the end of the year whether she'll organize another book festival. The event on Oct. 7 had beautiful weather but also competition from a Cardinals game and other outdoor activities. Still, at least 5,000 people came to shop for books, make crafts and hear one or more of the 47 authors speak, Prost said. "It was a wonderful crowd for a first-time event." Kris Kleindienst, co-owner of Left Bank Books, which sold books at the event, estimated at least $20,000 in sales....

A Greenville, S.C., developer has proposed a 120-acre outdoor mall for Richmond on land between Goggins Lane and Exit 87 of Interstate 75.Britt Goodson of Carolina Holdings said his firm has "a relationship" with property owners in the area and is working to secure some large commercial tenants to anchor the development.A spokesperson for one property owner confirmed discussions with an agent for Carolina Holdings, but said no property had changed hands.Goodson sounded cautious but optimistic when he said his firm believes it can secure commitments from enough "appropriate anchors to start moving dirt by the spring of 2007." By creating "an attractive critical mass of anchors," a lot of other stores will follow, he said.Reports circulating around Richmond in recent days have centered on Meijer, Home Depot, Kohl's and Target, but Goodson would not confirm any prospects.Among the stores in two Carolina Holdings developments in Tennessee are Target, Dick's sporting goods, TJ Maxx, Old Navy, Staples business supplies, Best Buy, Books-A-Million, Belk's, Kroger and JCPenney.Carolina Holdings' retail properties often include a large cinema complex as well as retail outlets and restaurants....

Seriously tough books
Posted Saturday, September 02, 2006 12:47:33 AM by Blog57 Team
I have recently returned from an event in South Wales hosted by Panasonic to celebrate the tenth anniversary of its Toughbook line of ruggedised notebooks. While you always have to treat these types of tub-thumping events with a pinch of salt I must admit my cynicism was seriously challenged by the level of engineering that goes into your average Panasonic Toughbook. For those unfamiliar with the Toughbook line they are a series of so called "ruggedised" laptops, ranging from seriously hefty machines designed primarily for outdoor use in sectors such as the military, police and utilities to lightweight business laptops engineered to better withstand the knocks and scrapes of getting kicked around an aircraft hold or crammed onto a Japanese subway. The engineering on the more sturdy of these models is quite remarkable....
