While they were sleeping ...: ... workers weren't wasting time, books' authors say

"Creativity is often a matter of seeing new connections between old things. That is why people solve problems by napping." -- from "The Art of Napping at Work" by Camille and Bill Anthony It's 2 p.m. on a workday. You're sitting in front of your computer reading the same sentence over and over. Or you're checking your e-mail every five seconds. Or you're channeling all your effort into keeping your eyelids open. You're getting nothing done. It's time for a nap, my friend. And, yes, at work. ....

Artist uses computer to sidestep limitations

Sometimes, overcoming adversity can be a spur to creativity. Marie Swartz, struggling with a condition called "essential tremor," which caused her hands to tremble so she couldn't draw or sculpt, learned new computer skills to create the digital collages she's showing at Joan Grona Gallery through Saturday. "My hands shook so much I couldn't control a pencil, but I could use a mouse," Swartz said. "I've had a lot of art training, and I think that is absolutely necessary. Even if you're doing everything on a computer, you still have to understand composition, line and color. "I had these Asian postcards that I liked, which I've combined with some of my own photographs, and I color them on computer so they all blend together." Swartz learned to stitch her images together seamlessly, forming whimsically surreal scenes that hint at darker psychological dimensions....

Our projections are listed here, although we won't know for sure what bubble teams get to keep playing until the computer does the math. The OHSAA will reveal its full playoff bracket Sunday afternoon. ....

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) is no stranger to antitrust skirmishes and complaints from competitors about unfair business practices. But the latest fight over its upcoming Vista operating system pits Microsoft against an unlikely adversary: the security software vendors who are some of its most intimate partners in protecting its notoriously vulnerable systems from attacks. As Vista's planned release nears, the company is facing a backlash from such vendors as Symantec Corp. and McAfee Inc., which argue that even the concessions Microsoft recently made to appease European antitrust regulators won't do enough to help them best protect their customers. "We've been talking to them for over two years on this issue," said Rowan Trollope, Symantec's vice-president for consumer engineering....

City releases financial data after accounting inquiry
Posted Friday, October 20, 2006 6:48:28 PM by Blog57 Team
Top Dallas fiscal officials say city government is unlikely to experience repercussions after several accounting errors prompted a half-year delay in its 2004-05 comprehensive annual financial report while internal staff and independent auditors scoured City Hall's books. Dallas released the report, typically issued March 31, on Thursday. The accounting errors, first discovered earlier this year by new city Controller Edward Scott, caused the net value of Dallas' assets to increase on paper by $58 million, chief financial officer Dave Cook said. Mr. Cook stressed that the errors are clerical – in some cases, computer-program glitches and data-entry mishaps – and Dallas' cash flow would be the same even if they had never occurred. "There was no mishandling of cash....

Bond is good for library

New Mexico libraries need more books. Please vote "yes" on General Obligation Bond C in the Nov. 7 general election. This bond will provide $9 million for new materials for libraries, including about $86,000 for the Alamogordo Public Library. This money is for library materials, including books and computer equipment. Alamogordo has received about $300,000 from similar bonds passed in 2002 and 2004. The bond money paid for new books for the collection, paid for part of the online catalog that lets you look up books from your Web browser, and paid for the wireless Internet system in the library. Early voting is in progress at the county courthouse, and starts Oct. 21 at White Sands Mall. Please vote. Allen Stenger Alamogordo ....

Kylie to write children's books
Posted Monday, October 02, 2006 10:47:12 AM by Blog57 Team
LONDON: Australian pop star Kylie Minogue launched her first children's book at the weekend, joining a long list of celebrities writing for the young. Publishing experts say that in the celebrity age, marketing is increasingly important to a book's sales and more and more stars are putting pen to paper with varying degrees of success. But while kids' books can seem the easy option when launching a literary career, they are harder to get right than they appear, children's authors add. From the publisher's point of view, the advantage of attracting a big star is clear, despite the risk of critical derision or cynicism within the industry, experts say. The first in a series of children's books by US pop star Madonna, The English Roses, was described by the San Francisco Chronicle in 2003 as "cynical" and "unimaginative", but it went on to become the fastest selling picture book of all time....

How to get your degree and start your company at the same time Entrepreneurship is fast becoming the hottest ticket on campus. The field has grown explosively in the past few years, with successful business owners and alumni pouring $250 million into the creation of chaired positions in entrepreneurship and related fields between 1999 and 2003. Some 2,100 schools now offer coursework in entrepreneurship, up from just 380 in 1990, says the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. Computer deaths can be prevented
Posted Wednesday, September 13, 2006 2:49:25 PM by Blog57 Team
There are thousands of ways to kill a computer. Ive tried most of them. Theyve gone up in flames in front of my eyes, and died quiet and undramatic deaths at my hand. You name it: short circuits from bad repair work, a spilled Mountain Dew and deadly drops off a desk. Im a mass murderer. Its only fair, after all this destruction, that I offer a few ways to forestall the death of your computer. Today, we are not talking about glitches or problems. Were talking about stone-cold dead computers and how to avoid them. Heat kills If you cram your computer into a tight space, or pile books and software packages tightly around the machine, the ventilation system cant work effectively. Or, if you let dust build up in the protective grating by the exhaust fan, youll stifle the cooling system and the computer will eventually die....
