Posted Saturday, January 13, 2007 12:47:16 PM by Blog57 Team
CINCINNATI -- Following his first year with the Reds, pitcher Bronson Arroyo was named the winner of two local awards on Friday. The Cincinnati chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America voted Arroyo as winner of both the Johnny Vander Meer Award as the Reds' Most Outstanding Pitcher and the Joe Nuxhall Good Guy Award. Infielder Rich Aurilia was named the winner of the Ernie Lombardi Award as the club's Most Valuable Player. Arroyo, who was acquired in a March 2006 trade from Boston for outfielder Wily Mo Pena, went 14-11 with a 3.29 ERA in 35 starts last season. The right-hander led the Major Leagues in innings pitched with 240 2/3 and was tied for first in starts. The 30-year-old was also Cincinnati's lone representative to the All-Star Game in Pittsburgh. Aurilia, who departed as a free agent and signed with the Giants after the season, led the club in hitting with a .300 average and hit 23 home runs and 70 RBIs in 122....

Of innocence and heroes Adam Gopnik talks about his stories and writers who influence him
Posted Sunday, December 24, 2006 2:47:49 PM by Blog57 Team
Many readers first got to know writer Adam Gopnik as he chronicled his family's humorous five-year adventure in the City of Light in the best-selling Paris to the Moon. Gopnik's children, Luke and Olivia, emerge as the most lovable "characters" in his latest book, Through the Children's Gate. In a recent interview, though, the author was quick to insist that "all kids are charming and imaginative if you give them a chance and you listen to them." The great playfulness in his work reveals that Gopnik has never lost his ability to see life through the eyes of a child — through the children's gate, metaphorically speaking — and the collection is doubly brilliant in its ability to help readers look upon their own kids with greater appreciation. As Gopnik offers a rosy peep into the lives of two precocious, intensely lovable New York children, careful readers may see exciting parallels between his meticulous craftsmanship and the work of J.D....

Baseball writers ask MLB to put St. Louis All-Star Game on hold

The Baseball Writers' Association of America moved Wednesday to request that Major League Baseball withhold awarding the 2009 All-Star Game to the Cardinals until significant improvements are made to a press facility the organization considers unacceptable to host a special event. Commissioner Bud Selig described the matter as "a real and valid" issue Wednesday and acknowledged being made aware of the writers' concerns. "It's always a significant issue. I'm sensitive to it, and I know the issues are real and valid," Selig said. "The question is what can be done about it, and I don't have an answer about it right now." Major League Baseball is expected to award the 2008 All-Star Game to the New York Yankees, who will move from current Yankee Stadium into a new stadium the following year....

Israel Probes Naval Missile Defense Failure by Staff Writers Washington (UPI) Oct 17, 2006

An Israel Navy inquiry into the Hezbollah missile strike on an advanced Israeli warship in July has recommended against penalizing senior officers on the vessel, the Jerusalem post reported Monday. Four Israeli sailors were killed when a Chinese-built C-802 guided missile supplied by Iran to Hezbollah hit the INS Hanit on July 14 during the first week of the Lebanon war. The attack came as a stunning shock to the Israeli public and military command alike for a variety of reasons. Hezbollah was not believed to have any ordnance capable of hitting Israeli warships operating in the Mediterranean. Also, the Hanit, a Sa'ar-5 class missile ship, was regarded as one of the most technologically advanced vessels in the Israeli Navy and it had been assumed that the ship's own anti-ballistic missile defenses would give it adequate defense against such a missile attack....

High street bookshops 'serving up the same old recipe'
Posted Monday, October 09, 2006 2:47:44 AM by Blog57 Team
BOOKSHOPS do not reflect the diversity of modern British society and are failing to promote challenging modern literature, one of the country?s leading writers said yesterday. Patrick Neate, who won a Whitbread prize in 2001 for his novel Twelve Bar Blues, told an audience at The Times Cheltenham Literature Festival that high street bookshops were becoming like McDonald?s, pushing the same small selection of safe choices at readers instead of encouraging them to stretch themselves. ....

China Marks 75th Anniversary Of Japanese Invasion by Staff Writers Beijing (AFP) Sep 18, 2006

China marked the 75th anniversary Monday of what many see as the start of Japan's brutal World War II aggression, which would eventually cost an estimated 35 million dead and injured. The "Manchurian Incident," a rail sabotage engineered by Japanese forces as an excuse to annex northeast China, took place on September 18, 1931, leading to the founding of the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo in the northeast. "The September 18th Incident was the opening salvo of Japan's comprehensive armed invasion of China that later proceeded through Asia and the Pacific region," Xinhua news agency said. Fourteen cities in China's northeastern province of Liaoning will sound air raid sirens Monday evening at the precise time that Japan's army blew up a local railway line. Following the explosion, the Japanese army blamed a nearby garrison of Chinese soldiers for sabotaging its supply lines....
