They say Iran's Culture Ministry is dragging its feet or blocking new titles, and even demanding that previously published books be resubmitted for approval.Fierce critics of the authorities' campaign to rein in authors and publishers warn that the moves could destroy Iran's book industry. Dozens of authors and publishers say they have been waiting months for their new books, novels, or political essays to be published.Farkhondeh Hajizadeh, an Iranian writer and an award-winning publisher, said that the licensing process for new titles has become "a monster." Professor discusses slavery, religion in lecture
Posted Wednesday, October 25, 2006 6:48:30 AM by Blog57 Team
Professor Emmanuel C. Eze of DePaul University in Chicago talked about how enlightenment and religion played a role in the anti-slavery movement of the 18th century in a lecture. His speech focused mainly on the role of Anthony Benezet, who was born in France and moved to Philadelphia at the age of 17 with his parents to escape religious persecution. Once in Philadelphia, he joined the Society of Friends, better known as the Quakers. Later in life, he became extremely active in the anti-slavery movement. Benezet is credited with starting the first school for slaves in 1750, which he ran out of his own home, until 1770 when he opened the Negro School in Philadelphia, Eze said. At that time, many people such as Thomas Jefferson thought slaves were incapable of learning and knowledge, so Benezet opened these schools to prove those people wrong....

New surge of books taking aim at the religious right

IN THE FALL of 2003, Al Franken and other liberals, as if awakening from a deep sleep, charged onto the nation's best-seller lists to do battle page for page with the right-wing commentators long dominant there. A year later, George W. Bush won re-election anyway. Now, a much larger wave of books, written by authors ranging from moderate conservatives to social activists, is hitting bookstores -- just in time for the midterm elections in November -- with the religious right in their cross hairs. Although some of the nearly two dozen works aim simply to explain the evangelical movement, most are full-bore attacks, accusing conservative Christians of hijacking the Republican Party and of seeking to roll back the clock on freedoms many Americans take for granted....

Harvard Wants Religion To Return To Curriculum
Posted Friday, October 06, 2006 6:47:56 PM by Blog57 Team
BOSTON -- Harvard University, founded 370 years ago to train Puritan ministers, should again require all undergraduates to study religion, along with U.S. history and ethics, a faculty committee is recommending. The surprisingly bold recommendations come after years of rancorous internal debate over what courses should be required of all Harvard students. The current core curriculum has been criticized for focusing on narrow academic questions rather than real-world issues students would likely confront beyond the wrought-iron gates of Harvard Square. The report calls for Harvard to require students to take a course in "reason and faith," which could include classes on topics such as religion and democracy, Charles Darwin or a current course called "Why Americans Love God and Europeans Don't." ....

Tall Soldiers, Moderate Taxes & Unwarlike Pietism

Those who enjoy long history books and have a particular interest in German history, especially in the history of Prussia, will want to read "Iron Kingdom" (Harvard University Press, 775 pages, $35). And if none of the above applies, this book can still be read for sheer pleasure, with length entirely irrelevant because many will want to read it again. It is the pleasure of discovery that Christopher Clark offers in this account of the rise and fall of Prussia. There is the black legend of a congenitally aggressive kingdom habitually led to war by bird-brained militarists. There are also inflated claims of high intellectual achievement and religious tolerance yes, the emphatically Jewish Moses Mendelssohn was an accepted intellectual leader as early as the mid-18th century, but ordinary Jews did not attain full equality in Prussia until 1919, and then not for very long....

Shmuel Bar offers a much-needed account of the religious logic that inspires and justifies Islamic radicalism and its terrorist manifestations. His sections on the extremist legal justifications for attacking Americans, civilians, fellow Muslims, and particularly Israel are enlightening and useful for anyone who has wondered how religious thinking can be used to support terrorism. There are flaws in this book. Comparing classical Islamic law from the ....
