If you had wandered into the New York location of Christie's auction house in 1996, you could have purchased a print of Helmut Newton's "Two Pairs of Legs in Black Stockings, Paris" for about $2,300. Then you could have spent the next decade eating, sleeping or lounging beneath the image of two models wearing only black lingerie and black spiky heels. ....

Creative Imaging Inc. is growing its customer base and self-publishing book business after it recently installed a Xerox iGen3 110 digital production press. At the current pace of growth, volume is expected to double by the end of the year. 'The iGen3 press helps us win new business by keeping us ahead of the competition,' said Bernard Bahn, president, Creative Imaging Inc. 'With digital colour printing, we are better able to adapt to meet growing customer demands for high-quality, personalised, short-run jobs produced in one to two days.' No one to please but himself

John Szarkowski put himself out to pasture in 1991, ending a 29-year career as director of photography at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He returned to the art world 14 years later, but as an artist. A retrospective exhibition of his photographs opened at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2005 and traveled to four other museums, including MoMA. For people who knew Szarkowski only as a tastemaker and gatekeeper — one who defined photography as a modern art form and introduced the public to artists such as Diane Arbus, Garry Winogrand, Lee Friedlander and William Eggleston — it was a strange turn of events. Some suspected that he had taken up photography as a retirement hobby and had called in favors to promote himself. ....

Texian Market Days gearing up for weekend events

Fort Bend County has come a long way since Stephen F. Austin's band of settlers carved out a community from a hostile wilderness some 180 years ago. For a few days this weekend, county residents can return to those days to get a feel for what life was like for those early Texans. The Fort Bend Museum Association's 23rd Annual Texian Market Days celebration will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the George Ranch Historical Park in Richmond. The living history festival celebrates Fort Bend County's heritage, traditions and role in Texas history, from the early days in Austin's colony in the 1830s through the 1940s Great Depression and World War II."Texian Market Days is a unique opportunity for people to experience the unique history of Texas and the role that Fort Bend County plays in shaping it," said ranch director Bryan McAuley....

Album of visual cliches

I hesitated to write a review of this album of photographs because the truth of the matter is that it doesn't merit one. To publish a book that calls itself "Album hatzalamim: Yisrael 2006" ("The Album: Israel Photographers 2006") and does not include the works of Adi Ness, Ilit Azoulay, Simcha Sherman, Roi Cooper, Sharon Yaari, Yosef Cohen, Yoram Kupermintz, Gilad Ophir, Noa Ben-Shalom, Ilan Spira, Osnat Bar-Or, Efrat Shvili and a whole host of others - is like putting out an album of early Renaissance painting that leaves out Duccio and Giotto. The principle behind the selection of photographs in this book is not clear, and neither is the principle of exclusion. Why this book was published at all remains a mystery to me. Artistic considerations are certainly not part of it. What the book offers up are advertising photos of the most trivial kind alongside images that at least have some aesthetic intention....

It has been said that, in the future, a lot of journalism will be done by amateurs. So will a lot of movie-making, stock photography, radio shows and encyclopedia-writing. Where once people flipped through photo albums, now they use Flickr.com. Home video nights at a friend’s house have been replaced by YouTube.com. High school students in need of some quick facts skip Britannica and head to Wikipedia. It’s part of a trend called Web 2.0, which might best be described as the second coming of the Internet. Web 2.0 follows the burst of the dot-com bubble, which temporarily brought online growth to a halt. It is characterized by increasingly interactive nature of the web — rather than a collection of static pages viewed passively today’s Internet makes the user an active participant....

There's something about fall that brings readers back to the books. Maybe it's the memory of new school books, the sense of a new beginning. And this year is the beginning of a strong literary season, with many new books by local authors and books about local topics. This year, post-Katrina, booklovers will welcome the return of such major events as the Louisiana Book Festival in Baton Rouge, Oct. 27-28; The NOLA Book Fair, Oct. 28; and Words and Music: A Literary Feast in New Orleans, Nov. 1-6. Here's a reading list of some of the books due out over the coming months; for the literary calendar, see BOOKS, page D-12. NONFICTION r 'Redemption: The Last Battle of the Civil War,' by Nicholas Lemann (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, $24), is a look at Reconstruction in post-Civil War Mississippi....
