Millions of TV viewers have seen George Ross seated at The Donald's right hand on The Apprentice; 702 saw him in action as he negotiated real estate deals with them. He closed those deals by using human nature, time and simplicity to his advantage. Mr. Ross says that negotiation requires mutual trust, rapport and satisfaction. Trust means bargaining in good faith to reach terms acceptable to both parties. Rapport begins before talks – you must convince the other side that you can work together. Communicate via bridges (ask questions, respond to their perspective), not walls (saying no). Negotiating isn't about one deal; it's about the next deal, Mr. Ross says. If you bargain for the last nickel, the other party may not do business with you next time....

Is it the right time for you to start a business?

If you've been thinking about starting a business, perhaps you're waiting for just the right time. But is there ever such a thing as just the right time to go into business for yourself? Sometimes it's the right time, and you're not even aware of it. When I launched my own company, it wasn't a result of great planning. I was burned out and stuck in a job I didn't like. But I didn't know what to do instead. And I had been taught, "Never leave a job until you get another one." ....

John Naisbitt, the 77-year-old author of the best-selling "Megatrends" series of business books, hasn't always been a globetrotting sage. Naisbitt grew up in Glenwood, Utah, amid conservative Mormons and sugar-beet farmers. Eager to explore the world, he dropped out of high school and joined the Marines. In boot camp, Naisbitt read Irving Stone's novel "Lust for Life" on painter Vincent Van Gogh. It was the first book the young Naisbitt had read outside of school. On duty in the Pacific region, he pored through many more books, launching a lifetime of intellectual voyaging that has never ceased. "I had such an innocent eye and an insulated life," said Naisbitt in a recent telephone interview from his home in Vienna. "In the Marines, I was stunned, absolutely stunned, at everything around me, at what the world looked like." New book coming Sixty years later, Naisbitt, a former marathoner, is still going strong....

UK manufacturing order books hit 21-month high in Sept - CBI UPDATE
Posted Friday, September 22, 2006 10:47:48 AM by Blog57 Team
LONDON (AFX) - Manufacturing order books in the UK hit a 21-month high in September, boosted by a rise in export orders, the country\'s leading business lobby group said today. In its monthly industrial trends survey, the Confederation of British Industry said a balance of -5 pct of firms reported order books were above normal during the month, against -8 pct in August. The latest figure was much better than the deterioration to -10 pct predicted by analysts. Although negative, the CBI said the figure is the strongest since December 2004\'s -4 pct. The improvement is mainly due to stronger export orders, led by increased demand for capital goods, which includes shipbuilding, aerospace and industrial machinery. The level of export orders was an improvement on the last two months, with September\'s balance of -3 pct representing a return to the level seen in June....

In the movie "Kill Bill," David Carradine (Bill) is about to bop Uma Thurman (the Bride) with the business edge of a samurai sword when Thurman whops Carradine in the chest and stops him in mid- backswing. In that instant, Thurman achieves what business consultant, trainer and public speaker Sam Horn calls, in her book, "Pop." The Bride gets Bill's attention. He pauses long enough to ask, be fore he takes his last five steps and drops: "Pai Mei taught you the five- point palm exploding heart technique?" Well, of course, that venerable martial-arts misogynist taught her that heart-stopping trickery. And in "POP," Horn, a language-arts and marketing maven, is endeavor ing to hand off to readers a technique for marketing whatever products or services they have to offer....

Three-alarm fire destroys business

Jerry Greene was on the Coast when the phone rang at 5 a.m. Saturday. It was a long-time employee, who told Greene his family business, Hotel and Restaurant Supply at 2215 Old Marion Road, was on fire. "He said, 'Come now. It's bad,'" Greene said. "When I got here, it was worse than I could imagine." The first sign of trouble was a burglar alarm going off. When Meridian police responded about 3 a.m., they found the building on fire. The three-alarm fire turned into an all-day battle for the Meridian Fire Department with two shifts and as many as 64 firefighters responding from both A and C shifts. In all, the effort required use of five engines and a ladder truck. Battalion Chief Anthony Clayton said the layout of the building made it both difficult and dangerous for his men. "The building has so many compartments....
