| Green signal for Kolkata book fair at Maidan | | Posted Wednesday, January 17, 2007 2:47:44 PM by Blog57 Team | | Kolkata, Jan 16 (IANS) Kolkata Book Fair organisers Tuesday heaved a sigh of relief after months of uncertainty as the defence ministry said the event could be held at Maidan, the green area in the heart of the city. The Maidan is under the Indian Army's jurisdiction and greens have opposed any commercial activity there. Book Sellers and Publishers Guild general secretary Tridip Kumar Chatterjee said the fair would be held at Maidan. The West Bengal government made major efforts to ensure that the army allowed the Book Fair 2007 at the Maidan after the Calcutta High Court dismissed a public interest litigation by the guild seeking permission to hold the event on the ground. The court ruling said the organisers had nothing to do with 'public interest' and that it did not want to interfere in a dispute between the army and a private body, sending the ball back to the army's court.... | |

| | | Oprah Credited with Book Sales | | Posted Tuesday, November 07, 2006 2:48:46 PM by Blog57 Team | | It has been months since the Oprah book club made an official selection but getting a mention on her show still generates strong sales and an increased print run. Just ask the publishers of diet doctors Michael F. Roizen and Mehmet C. Oz. The pair appeared on Oprah's show Nov. 2 and since then, their books have occupied the top three spots on the best seller list of Amazon.com. The books are entitled "YOU: On a Diet" and "YOU: The Owner's Manual." The publisher of the Free Press, Martha Levin, says the company has increased the print run of "YOU: On a Diet," from 650,000 to 950,000. That's because customers are buying both the book alone and the book and DVD, thanks in part to Winfrey. Levin says Oprah obviously has a passion for the authors' work.... | |

Its premise comes from the wisdom of the Vedantha, which forms the philosophical foundation of Hinduism and which he studied for more than 20 years. The venerable London publisher hoped the account of how the funerary violin was almost wiped out by Vatican-organised purges might sell a few hundred copies to specialist readers. Title of Book No. 1 (and we're not making this up): Little T. Learns to Share. The book, being rushed to stores by Nov. 15 in time for the Christmas season, reportedly details Owens' travails as a little boy learning to share a new football with friends. It will be published by BenBella Books, an independent Dallas-based company, and is coauthored with freelance writer Courtney Parker. Before anyone starts laughing out loud, or even contemplates sharing the book with a 4-year-old, it should be remembered that Owens' dreadful memoir, T.O., actually hit The New York Times bestseller list this past summer, and his Cowboys jersey is the top-selling shirt of any player in the league.... | |
