| Biographies make a very interesting read | | Posted Thursday, February 02, 2006 1:01:25 PM by Rose Martins | Biographies make a very interesting read. It is always fascinating to learn about the life of a famous (or infamous) person. Human kind is always curious to take a peek into the lives of others, especially those who have suffered, been cruel or who have worked extremely hard to get where they are at.
One can read about the life of someone like Hitler or Saddam Hussein, and perhaps get a glimpse of what made a human being turn into such a monster, or how he managed to persuade his follows to believe in his cause. There are biographies of famous literary heroes of yesteryear, that remain legends of today, such as William Shakespeare.
I doubt there is a school in the world that does not educate about the works and life of Shakespeare. The biography of a famous artist such as Michelangelo, whose life makes a fantastic read, as does a political heroe such as Ghandi or Mandela who revolutionized their countries.
And let's not forget the biography of a musician such as Mozart, who lives on forever through his work. Biographies are not only written about the lives of those who have since died. There are many modern day biographies, sharing the lives of today's hero's with the people of the world.
Music heartthrobs such as Shakira, Selena, Aaliyah, Madonna and Michael Jackson are popular reads. And with the paparazzi and the people magazines, biographies of our superstars are easily available, some real stories and some are purely sensational fiction.

| | | Officials turn page on Da Vinci art mystery | | Posted Sunday, January 14, 2007 2:49:15 PM by Blog57 Team | | Rome- A real-life Da Vinci mystery, complete with tantalizing clues and sharp art sleuths, may soon be solved, as researchers resume the search for a lost Leonardo masterpiece believed to be hidden within a wall in a Florence palace. Culture Minister Francesco Rutelli and officials in the Tuscan city announced last week that they had given approval for renewed exploration in the Palazzo Vecchio, the seat of power for various Florence rulers, including the Medici family in the 16th century. There, some researchers believe, a cavity in a wall may have preserved Leonardo's unfinished painted mural of the "Battle of Anghiari" for more than four centuries. The search for the Renaissance masterpiece began about 30 years ago, when the art researcher Maurizio Seracini noticed a cryptic message painted on one of the frescoes decorating the "Hall of the 500." "Cerca, trova" - "seek and you shall find" - said the words on a tiny green flag in the "Battle of Marciano in the Chiana Valley," one of the military scenes painted by the 16th-century artist Giorgio Vasari.... | |

| | | Bogdanovich revises, expands tribute to revered director Ford | | Posted Tuesday, November 07, 2006 10:48:18 AM by Blog57 Team | | Martin Scorsese happens to say it in a new incarnation of Peter Bogdanovich's documentary, but many others have uttered variations: "Any serious person making films today, whether he knows it or not, is affected by Ford." Indeed, John Ford is the postmortem rival of Alfred Hitchcock in the extent of his influence on generations of filmmakers. Scorsese makes his pronouncement in Peter Bogdanovich's old/new documentary "Directed by John Ford." It was a sensation at the 1971 Venice Film Festival, two years before Ford died. But it got little play because its sponsor, the American Film Institute, ran out of money to pay for many of the film clips in the documentary, severely limiting the circumstances under which the film could play. Turner Classic Movies to the rescue.... | |

| | | Raiders, Steelers bucking heads again | | Posted Saturday, October 28, 2006 6:49:14 PM by Blog57 Team | | BOTH TEAMS are clad in black. Both teams play in blue-collar towns. Black and blue: A perfect description of the unique rivalry that is the Oakland Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers. No other NFL rivalry compares with these two franchises. No other rivalry has had as many cheap shots, indescribable finishes, Hall of Fame talent, colorful characters, and even a court case. "It was a soap opera." Steelers owner Dan Rooney said. These two rivals, stripped of their uniforms, competed before judge and jury after Pittsburgh coach Chuck Noll accused Al Davis of harboring a "criminal element" in Oakland. "I testified more than once," Rooney said, "before they made a deal that neither Al nor I would have to testify in the end, to get this thing over. "But it was a great time for football, and it was a great rivalry for the NFL.... | |

| | | Buried by Winchell answers | | Posted Thursday, October 19, 2006 10:48:12 AM by Blog57 Team | | Help! I'm over here, buried under the pile of Paul Winchell biographies. True, I brought it on myself. I wrote about the famous 1950s ventriloquist Paul Winchell and his inanimate sidekick Jerry Mahoney, then added that I thought I remembered he was an inventor. Finally, I asked if any of you recalled what he invented. That's when the storm hit. Some of you remembered, but most of you went to the Internet to fill in my ignorance gap. Paul Winchell, as it turns out, was a very important inventor who built the earliest version of the artificial heart and donated his invention to the University of Utah, where others, including Dr. Jarvik, improved on it - and continue to do so. Mr. Winchell didn't stop inventing or entertaining until his death last year. Moreover, as a special note to those of us in Cincinnati, Paul's early supporter and mentor in his heart research was Dr.... | |

| | | Foes never a mystery to Warrior football team | | Posted Sunday, October 01, 2006 2:47:18 AM by Blog57 Team | | When it comes to preparing for games, the University of Hawai'i football players read the writing on the wall ... and the articles on the wall ... and the biographies ... "Everything we need to know about our next opponent is on the bulletin board in the locker room," UH quarterback Colt Brennan said. "It's amazing what they come up with." Tonight, the Warriors and visiting Eastern Illinois meet for the first time since 2002. Since then the Panthers have changed offensive coordinators and personnel. Yet, the Warriors have been able to follow the Panthers. They know the Panthers, who compete in Division I-AA, are limited to offering 63 scholarships. (The Warriors, as Division I-A member, can offer 85 scholarships.) They know the Panthers brought 58 players on this trip, are staying in Waikiki, and visited the Arizona Memorial after yesterday's walk-through practice at Aloha Stadium.... | |

| | | After guilty plea, state lifts Lynch's law license | | Posted Thursday, September 21, 2006 2:49:40 PM by Blog57 Team | | After pleading guilty to defrauding the state's citizens and tax evasion in federal court last week, former state Sen. John A. Lynch Jr.'s law license was temporarily suspended by the Supreme Court. The suspension, ordered Tuesday, prevents Lynch from functioning in any capacity as an attorney in the state -- neither able to take cases nor provide legal advice. But even before Lynch's plea, any reference to him was removed from the Web site of the law firm his father founded. Several partners from Lynch's original law firm broke off to form their own firm, Martin, Kane, Kuper in North Brunswick. Lynch and several other partners, remained to create Lynch, Keefe, Bartels, with offices in Shrewsbury, Newark and Perth Amboy. Only a few weeks ago, the law firm's Web site detailed its ties to Lynch and his father.... | |
